For this reason, the owners at The Hoppy Monk have decided that our brewpub should be entirely powered by wind and sun.
Solar Power – The How and Why
When we say that we are partially powered by the sun and partially powered by the wind, it is only natural to wonder, how is that even possible? To elaborate, we should first explain how the solar panels on the roof of our building work. Solar panels absorb the sun’s energy throughout the day and convert it into direct current (DC) energy. Because most businesses run on alternating current (AC) energy, the DC electricity is then passed through an inverter to convert it to usable AC energy.
The Hoppy Monk has reaped the many benefits of going solar. Here are a few of our favorites:
Saves the Environment
The United States places second in the world in carbon dioxide emissions. Installing solar panels is a great way for us to reduce our carbon footprint by replacing utility power with clean electricity.
Studies have found that adding solar panels allows businesses to save hundreds of dollars monthly on utility costs. We can then pass these savings along to the customer by offering special happy hour deals on our food and drinks.
Wind Power – The Basics
Wind energy is right up there with solar energy as one of the fastest-growing sources of energy. As one of the few eco friendly restaurants in San Antonio, The Hoppy Monk is committed to harnessing energy from the wind to power our restaurant. Like solar energy, the main benefit of wind energy is that it’s a green energy source. This means it doesn’t pollute our environment the same way that fossil fuels, nuclear power, and coal do.
Another advantage of using wind – and solar – energy is the fact that they are renewable. Unlike oil, coal, and fossil fuels, wind is a renewable type of energy that will never go away. After all, all you need is a windy day to collect energy, and those aren’t going away anytime soon.
